Eric “Red” Schafer 2011 Grappling Report

One year ago, Eric “Red” Schafer won the 2010 Grappler of the Year for Wisconsin going (19-1). Of those 19 wins in 2010, he managed to win 17 of them via submission using 10 different types of submissions for a finishing ratio of over 89%. In 2011, he managed to outdo his 2010 performances in all categories. Despite training for two MMA fights last year, Red was still able to compete in grappling 21 times going undefeated at (21-0) for the year. He managed to submit every opponent but one, increasing his finishing ratio to over 95% this year, a 6% increase over the previous year. In 2011, he submitted 20 opponents using 13 different submissions. In 2010 his most utilized move was the Von Flue Choke with which he won 3 matches, but in 2011 his most utilized submission was the triangle choke with 4 victories.

Red started out 2011 by competing at the King Grappler X in January. He defeated his first two opponents with a front choke and a heel hook. In the finals of the +175lb division he then faced Filipe Barbosa, a BJJ brown belt under Marcello Monteiro. He again utilized a front choke to defeat the Brazilian. The King of Kings is then determined by taking the winner of the +175lb division versus the winner of the -175lb divison. Red faced TapouT reality star and multiple Bellator tournament winner, Pat Curran of Curran Martial Arts in Illinois. Red was able to secure a rear naked choke to win the King of Kings and take home the $500 cash prize.

Less than a month later at Combat Corner Grappling Championships – Volume 6, Red returned to the mats to capture the +170lb absolute division, a field that consisted of 13 grapplers including UFC stars such as Anthony Pettis and Pat Barry. Joe Ruiz of Submit Sport was submitted with a leg scissors choke and Jim Fritz of SUDA in Illinois was tapped with a triangle choke. He also was able to defeat Matt Jukkala, an All Guard Combatives Tournament Champion and purple belt out of Guerilla/Alliance BJJ in Minnesota with a Von Flue Choke. Red Schafer Mixed Martial Arts grapplers, Dave Kleczkowski and Tony Senner rounded out the division finishing 2nd and 3rd place respectively. They split the $400 cash prize provided by the tournament sponsor, Concede Fightwear.

In March, the Red Schafer Mixed Martial Arts grappling team faced off in a dual meet against Kenosha’s Gracie Barra school. Red dressed as the comic book superhero, Spiderman and was able to submit Rob Carbajal with a triangle choke while the Red Schafer Mixed Martial Arts grappling team took home the team victory with a score of (59-6).

King Grappler XI took place in April in Madison. In the first round of the +175lb absolute division Red defeated John Peralta with a triangle choke. In the second round Red faced Raphael Barbosa, an LCCT BJJ black belt. The Brazilian utilized a conservative closed guard to take the match into deep water but after over 60 minutes Barbosa was submitted with a rear naked choke. In the finals of the 175+ division, Red faced off against Mario Roberto’s top student, Dan Leckel, a purple belt from Rochester, Minnesota, who was submitted with a straight armbar. The King of Kings is then determined by taking the winner of the +175lb division versus the winner of the -175lb divison. Red faced Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt, Joao “Mosquito” Bosco of LCCT. Red was able to secure a foot lock to win the King of Kings and take home the $500 cash prize.

The Waukesha Open 3 occurred in May of 2011. In the first of two cage grappling matches he submitted Rob Keller, a BJJ blue belt, with a Peruvian Necktie. He then defeated Justin Hutter, a brown belt from Waukesha MMA with a straight armbar before bowing out of the tournament. Tony Senner, Red’s wrestling coach went on to win the Waukesha Open absolute division.

In July of 2011 at the C3 “Patriot Games” in Gary, Indiana, Red competed again in the absolute division. He defeated Mitch Banic of Corral’s Martial Arts with a kimura and Quinton McCoffell of 11th Dimension with a triangle choke. In the finals, Red faced off a very tough Mark Vujovic. Vujovic is a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu brown belt, multiple time NAGA champion, and instructor at Carlson Gracie BJJ in Chicago. Red won on points in the only match of the year that he was not able to secure a submission and took home the $400 cash prize.

In September, at a NCGA team dual meet, the Red Schafer Mixed Martial Arts grappling team faced off against the Waukesha MMA team and won with a team score of (33-28). Red squared off against Craig Caliendo and won with an armbar.

In the final King Grappler of the year in September, Red cruised to the victory in the +175lb Absolute Division defeating Badgerland grapplers with triangle choke and arm bar victories before facing his teammate Chris Senner with a guillotine choke in the finals of the King of Kings where Senner had won the -175lb Absolute Division.

The Return of Red Schafer

After over a year off from MMA competition, Eric “Red” Schafer will be making his long-awaited return to the cage Labor Day Weekend in the main event at XFO 41: Outdoor War 7. Since compiling a professional record of (11-5-2) at light heavyweight in a professional career that dates back to 1998 and includes seven fights in the UFC, Schafer will make his professional debut in the 185lb middleweight class.

While not yet signed, his opponent is expected to be Chris Albandia of the Midwest Training Center in Schaumberg, Illinois, a gym that has housed fighters such as Clay Guida, Jason Guida, Brian Gassaway, Adam Maciejewski, Kevin Knabjin, John Hosman, and Chase Beebe. Albandia is an IFL and M-1 Global veteran who holds an MMA record of (8-6). He has fought notable opponents such as Brian Ebersole, Lee Murray, Andrei Semenov, Fabio Leopoldo, Nathan Coy, and Jeremy May. He wrestled at the collegiate level at St. Olaf College in Minnesota.

Since his exit from the UFC, Schafer has opened his own gym, Red Schafer Mixed Martial Arts in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He has also been active in the grappling community being awarded the 2010 grappler of the year from USCombatSports.com and currently holds a streak of 52 straight wins in no-gi grappling that dates back to April of 2008.

Schafer has competed in the XFO in the past defeating The Ultimate Fighter 8 alum, Jason Guida at XFO 6 in June of 2005 and became the XFO light heavyweight champion in January of 2006 by defeating William Hill at XFO 9.

Jess Gonzalez, the new Program Coordinator of Boxing and Mixed Martial Arts with the State of Wisconsin Department of Regulation & Licensing came to the gym and spoke to fighters from several area gyms. As many of you may or may not know, in 2010, Wisconsin became the 43rd state to regulate Mixed Martial Arts.

Gonzalez spoke to the group about the licensing and application process for Mixed Martial Arts in the state of Wisconsin. He also spoke about rules, weigh-ins, medical requirements, and how to become involved if you are interested in becoming a licensed official with the state of Wisconsin. In the first matchup of the National Cage Grappling Association’s 8-team duel tournament against Gracie Barra – Kenosha at Waukesha MMA last Saturday, Red Schafer Mixed Martial Arts proved that despite being the youngest team in the tournament we are not to be taken lightly. The squad won by a score of 59-6 and won eleven of the twelve weight classes, finishing with the most dominating score of the six teams competing last Saturday.

The competition team was an all-star line up of Red Schafer Mixed Martial Arts top grapplers that included Courtnie Korpela, Amanda Page, Chris Senner, Josh Hinsenkamp, Chris Piper, Mike Litschauer, Mike DeMarco, James Priest, Tony Senner, Dave Kleczkowski, Karl Turek, and Eric Red Schafer.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu purple belt, Josh Hinsenkamp defeated Mike Kwan using a D’arce choke. Rubber guard specialist, Chris Piper finished Josh O’Connor with a calf crusher and also displayed an impressive electric chair. BJJ brown belt Mike DeMarco defeated Tom Angelhoff, 13 to 4. James Priest defeated Nick Riggle, 6 to 0 exhibiting a very deep rear naked choke that almost finished his opponent. BJJ blue belt and wrestling extraordinaire, Tony Senner defeated Ricky Stettner 16-2, one point shy of tech fall. Professional MMA fighter, Karl Turek used the match to get some cage time in preperation for his next fight and defeated Doug Sawyer via D’arce choke. Amanda Page, the greenest of the squad fought a very game bout against a very tough and experienced Joe Flores but fell via armbar. Courtnie Korpela, Chris Senner, Mike Litschauer, and Dave Kleczkowski all won via forfeiture.

In the last match of the night, coach Red Schafer donned his Spider Man suit and used his spidey senses to defeat Rob Carbajal via triangle choke. Past costumes in grappling cage matches have included Red dressing up as Robin – The Boy Wonder and Ravishing Rick Rude.

Next up, Red Schafer Mixed Martial Arts is slated to face “Old Man” Reese Shaner’s Waukesha MMA squad in the semi-finals of the NCGA tournament. No date or location has yet been determined.

Karl Turek Opponent Change

Milwaukee’s own Karl “Robocop” Turek was slated to face Ron Faircloth in an MMA fight in April at KOTC: Outkasts but the UFC veteran has opted out of the bout due to an opportunity to fight overseas according to US Combat Sports.com. Instead Turek will now face Faircloth’s former Chosen Few teammate, Dallas O’Malley.

O’Malley sports a professional MMA record of (7-2) according to Sherdog and wrestled for a short time at Iowa State, one of the top collegiate wrestling programs in the country. Of his seven wins, three of his wins have via submission, two via TKO, and two by unanimous decision. Since turning pro in January of 2010 he has fought and jumped around multiple weight classes fighting at heavyweight, light heavyweight, and middleweight. He most recently fought Gerald Meerschaert at Combat USA 24 in January of this year, a bout he was winning but ultimately ended up losing via guillotine choke to the 2010 US Combat Sports.com fighter of the Year for Wisconsin. O’Malley’s record on paper looks impressive but a closer look reveals he is (1-1) against opponents with winning records. A win over the (10-6) Turek would be his most impressive win to date.

Since joining Red Schafer Mixed Martial Arts and the Rebel Alliance Fight Team, Turek has stated he only wants to fight the best competition he can find. He’s going to need to be on top of his game to stifle the wrestling of O’Malley using a combination of sweeps, takedown defense, and submissions. As stated in this earlier article, Turek who’s won four of his last fights will be the first fighter to represent Red Schafer Mixed Martial Arts in the cage. Dan Henderson Returns to Championship Form With Win Over Feijao in Strikeforce

The last time Dan Henderson fought in Columbus, Ohio was at UFC 82 against Anderson Silva approximately 3 years ago, a fight he lost via rear naked choke. On Saturday he returned to the Buckeye state for another chance at a title against Anderson Silva’s teammate Rafael “Feijao” Cavalcante.

In the first round, Feijao was able to drop Henderson with a big right hand that sent him to the canvas. Henderson proved once again that his chin may indeed be made of granite and used a powerful takedown to drive Feijao to the canvas and survive on top.

The second round Henderson again used his world class wrestling to grind the champion and it was evident that Feijao was beginning to slow down and fade. Less than a minute into the third round Henderson punched the Brazilian with his classic overhand right that spun Feijao 180 degrees and sent him crashing face first into the canvas. Henderson quickly took back mount and began smashing down right hands until Dan Miragliotta was forced to stop the fight.

At 40 years old, Dan Henderson is the oldest current champion in any of the major organizations but he didn’t look like an old man on Saturday. The biggest question was whom he would face next? It is speculated that he will more than likely face the winner of next month’s Gegard Mousasi vs. Mike Kyle bout but he is open to fighting at middleweight making it entirely possible that he could attempt to win two titles in two different divisions simultaneously, a feat he previously accomplished in Pride.

Marloes Coenen vs. Liz Carmouche

Marloes Coenen came into her title defense on Saturday as a big favorite. A bout with Meisha Tate had to be scrapped due to injury leaving Strikeforce to find a suitable opponent two weeks prior to the bout.

Liz Carmouche took the challenge on short notice and came into the bout with a (5-0) record and less than one years experience. On paper it looked like a serious mismatch as Coenen had over 20 fights and 10 years of experience versus her less experienced opponent. However, Carmouche proved to the world that she deserved to be in the cage with Coenen.

Coenen won the first round but the tables turned quickly in the second round when Carmouche survived a guillotine choke and ended up on top. For two rounds Carmouche used dominant positional grappling to get to full mount and use ground and pound to punish the champion but lacked the ability to finish with a submission or technical knock out. Carmouche again reverted to her wrestling in the fourth round but Coenen was able to slap on a triangle choke on the takedown attempt finishing Carmouche showing that she had the heart of champion.

Tim Kennedy vs. Melvin Manhoef

Coming off a very close decision loss to Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza in August of last year Tim Kennedy looked to get back on the winning track. Kennedy wanted no part of the Dutch striker’s stand up game and wasted little time exploiting the most obvious of Melvin Manhoef’s weaknesses, his ground game. Once he secured the takedown he gained back mount he locked in a rear naked choke at 3:41 of the first round.

A win in a rubber match between him and Jason “Mayhem” Miller or the dangerous slugger, Robbie Lawler may be in order before Kennedy is given the green light for a rematch with the current Strikeforce middleweight champion, Ronaldo “Jacre” Souza.

Jorge Masvidal vs. Billy Evangelista

Jorge Masvidal used his size and reach advantage to stifle the little offense that Billy Evangelista had to offer. Masvidal stuffed most of Evangelista’s takedown attempts and Evangelista looked sluggish not throwing many punches throughout the first two rounds. It wasn’t until the third round that Evangelista started to get busy on offense realizing that he needed a finish to win the fight. The judges saw the fight (30-27) for Masvidal and Evangelista suffered the first loss of his career. Masvidal is another quality fighter to add to Strikeforce’s already deep lightweight division.

Red Schafer Mixed Martial Arts fighter, Karl “Robocop” Turek will take on UFC veteran Ron “The Blunt Instrument” Faircloth on April 9, 2011 at King of the Cage: Outkasts in Lac du Flambeau, Wisconsin. The bout will take place at 205lbs or light heavyweight. Turek’s fight is the first fight to be announced for a Red Schafer Mixed Martial Arts fighter.

Karl Turek began his MMA career under Wisconsin MMA legend Adrian Serrano and won his first MMA fight just over 4 years ago under the Konquer the Kage banner in January of 2007. He later switched gyms to train under Duke Roufus before joining the Red Schafer MMA Fight Team. Turek sports an MMA record of (10-6). He specializes in submission grappling and ground and pound and 60% of his wins have come via submission.

Ron Faircloth’s pro career began in 1999 and he holds 33 wins in a fight career that has spanned more than 50 fights in over a dozen organizations including the UFC, WEC, Bodog, and Canada’s MFC. Faircloth also specializes in submissions with over half of his wins coming this way. He fights out of the Chosen Few Gym in Madison, Wisconsin with notable fighters such as Pat O’Malley, James Warfield, and Jordan Faas.

Faircloth will be looking to stay relevant in the fight game with a win over Turek. He’s currently riding a 2-fight losing streak most recently losing to Marcus Vanttinen (19-2) in Finland in January of 2011. Prior to that he lost to eventual Combat USA Middleweight Champion, Gerald Meerschaert in the semi-finals of the Combat USA Middleweight Tournament last July via rear naked choke in the 2nd round.

For Turek, he needs to prove the Chosen Few Gym doesn’t have his number. Two of his losses are to Chosen Few fighters. Turek lost to Chosen Few’s, Pat O’Malley while fighting for the Gladiators Middleweight Championship back in March of 2009. After that he rattled off 4 straight wins in 11 months before being derailed by Chosen Few’s Todd Raymond at ECO 7 last August.

A win over a crafty veteran fighter like Faircloth will get Turek back on track in a division filled with Wisconsin fighters like Caleb Nelson, Sam Alvey, Justin Lemke, Will Dicke and Todd Raymond.

Eric “Red” Schafer 2010 Grappling Report

In 2010, Eric “Red” Schafer posted a solid (19-1) record in submission grappling events in Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, and Iowa in 7 different events.

Of the 19 wins, only 2 matches were won by points. Despite having a reputation for being an arm triangle/side choke specialist, he finished his 17 submission victories using 10 different finishing moves with his Von Flue choke being the most effective with 3 wins.

He started out the year in January winning the Heavyweight Cage Grappling Championship for the Wisconsin Fighting Championships defeating catch-wrestling specialist, David De Lao Sr. for the belt. The match took place in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and ended via Von Flue choke.

In early May, he won the No-Gi Advanced Absolute Division at the “C3: Torneo de Mayo” event in Gary, Indiana despite a hand/wrist injury suffered in the UFC a month and a half earlier. All the matches were finished via submissions (triangle choke, rear naked choke, and kimura) and he took home the $500 cash prize. His lone loss also came at this event in the Black Belt Gi Absolute Division against 2009 Pan Am medallist, Jay Valko of Chicago in a match decided by points.

A week later he successfully defended his Wisconsin Fighting Championships title against Fox Valley Grappling Club’s head BJJ instructor, Bill Kreig. The match took place in Appleton, Wisconsin and ended via arm triangle/side choke.

To cap off a successful month of May, Red won the Sasquatch Open Tournament in Davenport, Iowa, an event that attracts some of the top talent in the Midwest. The “Lock-Ness” tournament consists of an invite only, 8-man bracket with no time limits and submission only victories to advance. Despite a grueling opening match against Rodrigo Vaghi brown belt, Jon Menke that lasted over 30 minutes, Red managed to pull out the victory with an arm triangle/side choke. He finished Steve Patterson of Brujo Jiu-Jitsu with a rear naked choke and professional fighter, Joe Wilk with a Von Flue choke to take home the $500 cash prize.

At “C3: The Patriot Games” in July, Red returned to Gary, Indiana to win the No-Gi Advanced Absolute and capture the $500 in prize money. He defeated his first two opponents via baseball and d’arce chokes before defeating Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt, Lyndon Viteri via points after an 8 minute match.

In September at the NAGA Midwest Grappling Championships in Chicago, Illinois, Red defeated Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt, Robert Casey of Staten Island MMA from New York via points (6-0) in the No-Gi Expert Heavyweight Division.

In late September, Red capped off his competition run at the Waukesha MMA Open winning the No-Gi Heavyweight and Absolute Divisions winning all 7 matches with 7 different submissions.

That same month, the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt left Roufusport to begin work on his own gym, Red Schafer Mixed Martial Arts in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The gym opened in December and he continues to teach grappling and mixed martial arts while representing the Wisconsin grappling scene and cementing his legacy of being Wisconsin’s most famous and recognizable face of submission grappling.

Alistair “The Demolition Man” Overeem took less than a round to pound out Brett Rogers and retain his status as the Strikeforce Heavyweight Champion. Strikeforce’s Heavy Artillery card took place in front of over 8,000 fans at the Scott Trade Center in St. Louis, Missouri on Saturday night. Overeem, who had not defended his belt since November of 2007, appears ready to become a fixture in the organization and has his sights set on Fedor Emelianenko, should Emelianenko be able to defeat Fabricio Werdum in June. That bout will take place in Los Angeles, California.

The always popular and former UFC Heavyweight Champion, Andrei “The Pitbull” Arlovski suffered his third straight loss to Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva. Both fighters were in must win situations as Arlovski had already suffered back to back defeats to both Fedor Emelianenko and Brett Rogers in 2009. Silva suffered a unanimous decision loss in November of last year. Prior to that loss, he went on a six-fight winning streak and was the EliteXC Heavyweight Champion but a failed drug test sent him to Japan to fight in Sengoku until his suspension ran out.

Silva beat Arlovski in every facet of the game. Surprisingly, he was the superior striker and regularly beat his opponent to the punch. He had Arlovski in trouble on multiple occasions in both the first and second rounds but Arlovski’s chin proved to be durable enough to withstand the assault. Silva is now back on the road to contendership in the division with the (29-28) unanimous decision victory. Despite Arlovski’s loss, Scott Coker stated in a post fight press conference that Andrei Arlovski will be back and he will be a big part of Strikeforce’s in the future in 2010.

Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza rattled off his second straight win in Strikeforce defeating a very game, yet outmatched opponent in Joey Villasenor. His first Strikeforce win came back in December where he polished off Olympic wrestling silver medallist, Matt Lindland in under a round with an arm triangle choke. The five-time Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu World Champion may see himself fighting for the 185lb Strikeforce Middleweight Championship in the near future if the organization is able to resign it’s current champion, Jake Shields.

Eight-time Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu world champion, Roger Gracie was easily able to rack up a win against former UFC Heavyweight Champion, Kevin Randleman. Rather than attempt to take the fight to the ground, Gracie chose to stand and trade shots for much of the match with Randleman. Despite only landing 28 out of 122 strikes thrown, according to Compustrike, he was easily able to win the standup. A knee from clinch rung Randleman’s bell in the second and Gracie secured a rear naked choke that rendered Randleman unconscious.

Ultimate Fighter season 8 fighter, Antwain Britt may have nearly doubled the offense of his opponent in the opening minutes of his fight against Blackhouse fighter, Rafael “Feijao” Cavalcante, but he ended up on the wrong side of a vicious knockout to start the televised portion of the card. Feijao, who is teammates with the likes of Anderson Silva, Lyoto Machida, and the Nogueira brothers is now one step closer to a shot at newly crowned Strikeforce Light Heavyweight Champion, Muhammed “King Mo” Lawal.

Alistair Overeem will finally return to U.S. soil to defend a belt he earned against Paul “The Headhunter” Buentello approximately three and half years ago in November of 2007. At the time, Strikeforce was still a regional promotion and had not done a show outside the state of California. Since that TKO victory over Buentello and a permanent move to the heavyweight division, Overeem hasn’t lost an MMA fight but he hasn’t exactly been fighting a who’s who list of MMA opponents in Japan and the Netherlands.

While fighting for promotions such as Dream, Ultimate Glory, and K-1, Overeem has racked up MMA wins over fighters such as Kazuyuki Fujita, James Thompson, Gary Goodrich, and Mark Hunt and all of the wins have been first round finishes. The only blemish was a no contest with Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic that saw Overeem dominating the aged fighter with takedowns and ground and pound. Multiple groin shots rendered Filipovic unable to continue, and the bout was ruled a no contest.

Overeem has gained more attention for his non-MMA exploits such as racking up wins in K-1 over renown kickboxers such as Badr Hari and Peter Aerts in recent years as well as his noticeably larger physique which he attributes to high protein diet of horse meat and weight lifting.

Brett Rogers grew up in the mean streets of Chicago in the projects known as Caprini Green before relocating to St. Paul, Minnesota. He began his MMA training at Team Bison, now known as Team Ambition, under the tutelage of Mike Reilly and former Chute Boxe coach, Sergio Cunha.

Rogers started his MMA career on a (5-0) run before being signed to EliteXC. He made his debut with the organization in November of 2007 and continued his winning streak in the organization compiling another three victories over Ralph Kelly, James Thompson, and Jon Murphy. After the Murphy bout, which appeared on CBS, Rogers called out the biggest star of the promotion, Kimbo Slice at a post fight press conference. EliteXC wanting to protect it’s top star, opted to have Slice fight Ken Shamrock instead of creating a star in Rogers and the rest his history, for EliteXC at least.

Following the collapse of EliteXC, Strikeforce purchased select assets and contracts of the organization. Nearly eleven months after the 61 second knockout of Jon Murphy, Brett Rogers would make his Strikeforce debut against another undefeated fighter in Ron “Abongo” Humphrey. Rogers walked away with a second round TKO and kept his undefeated record intact at (9-0).

Rogers was called upon to take what was, by far, the biggest fight of his career to date against a top five heavyweight and former UFC champion in Andrei “The Pitbull” Arlovski. That fight allowed him to quit his full time job as a tire technician at Sam’s Club and focus on MMA full time. Arlovski vs. Rogers was a fight that many considered to be a tune up fight for Arlovski who was coming off a first round KO loss at the hands of the greatest fighter of our time, Fedor Emelianenko, and Rogers came in as a heavy underdog. Rogers defeated Arlovski with a 22 second KO that changed the careers of both fighters dramatically. Arlovski was labeled as washed up by many fans, and Rogers became an instant star and top 10 ranked heavyweight in MMA. He also earned a chance to test his skills against Fedor Emelianenko on CBS in front of a nationally televised audience of millions and a soldout crowd at the Sears Center just northwest of Chicago where he had originally grown up.

Rogers had a few glimmering moments in the Fedor fight including breaking Emelianenko’s nose early on. He scrambled well to survive multiple times and ended up once in top position raining down strikes. Rogers survived the round, a feat that no fighter had done in over three years since Mark Coleman at Pride 32. Early in the second round, Rogers again used his size to push Emelianenko against the cage, controlling him and landing knees while tied up. Rogers then gave up the underhooks and moved to the center of the cage to restart. It would prove to be his biggest mistake as with one punch, “The Emperor” would throw his patented overhand right and send Rogers crashing to the canvas for the KO win.

By the numbers, Overeem has four times the MMA experience of Rogers with an MMA record of (32-11) with 1 no contest. All of Rogers’ 10 wins in his (10-1) record have come by way of strikes. Overeem has a more diverse and mixed bag of victories and is well versed both on the ground as well as on the feet. Most of his wins (19) have come by way of submission with 8 of those being the guillotine choke. Overeem is currently ranked at #9 in the world at heavyweight by both USA Today and Sherdog while Rogers is ranked one spot higher at #8.

While this fight is being contended for the Strikeforce Heavyweight Championship it only serves as a precursor for a fight against the #1 ranked heavyweight fighter in the world, Fedor Emelianenko later this year should Emelianenko be able to defeat #10 ranked heavyweight, Fabricio Werdum in June.
